Ecuador Travel: the Andes, the Amazon & Private Tailor-Made Adventures

Few countries pack as much variety into as small a space as Ecuador. The Avenue of the Volcanoes runs south from Quito through the Andes, flanked by snow-capped peaks and crater lakes, and leads into the cloud forest and the Amazon basin beyond. Colonial Quito, one of the best-preserved historic centers in Latin America, offers an opportunity to learn about Ecuador’s history while sampling some of the best coffee and chocolate on the continent. The markets of Otavalo and the historic haciendas of the Andean highlands all sit within easy reach. And then there are the Galapagos Islands, 600 miles offshore in the Pacific, where wildlife has evolved in near-total isolation.

Every Ecuador itinerary we build is designed around your interests and pace, using properties and vessels chosen from firsthand experience and guides who know their regions in depth. Our specialists know Ecuador intimately and understand how to design trips that do justice to every region. Explore our itineraries below and contact a Vaya specialist to begin planning your Ecuador journey.

Regions at a glance:

  • Quito — A UNESCO-listed colonial capital at 9,350 feet, with impressive restaurants, museums, and character
  • Cotopaxi and the Andes — Hike, horseback ride, bike, or simply admire this dramatic, glacier-capped region
  • Otavalo and the Northern Highlands — One of the Americas’ great markets, held every Saturday for centuries
  • Mindo and the Cloud Forest — Arguably South America’s top birding destinations, with tanagers, toucans, hummingbirds, and cock-of-the-rock
  • The Amazon — Remote jungle lodges, excellent local guides, and exceptional wildlife viewing
  • The Galapagos Islands — Explore these iconic islands from a boat chosen specifically for you. See our dedicated Galapagos page for vessel and itinerary options.

Frequently Asked Questions: Ecuador

Ecuador’s appeal lies in how much it concentrates into a small area. Quito’s UNESCO-listed colonial center is one of the finest in Latin America, and the highland valley immediately south — the Avenue of the Volcanoes — offers volcano hikes, crater lakes, and hacienda stays within a short drive. The Otavalo market is the largest Indigenous market in South America and worth the visit. The Amazon basin, accessible via a short flight from Quito, offers multi-day lodge stays with exceptional wildlife and cultural access. And the Galapagos Islands, 600 miles offshore, remain one of the world’s most remarkable wildlife experiences, best explored by small vessels over five to eight days.

Thanks to its position on the equator, Ecuador is a year-round destination, though timing matters by region. The highland and Quito area is driest from June through September, making it the best window for volcano hikes and outdoor activities. The Amazon is accessible year-round, though the drier months of June through September offer better trail conditions. Many travelers combine mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos in a single trip, in which case June through September works well for both.

Ten to fourteen days is the right length for a well-paced itinerary that combines Quito, at least one mainland region, and a Galapagos cruise. A week is enough for a focused trip — either the mainland alone or a short Galapagos cruise with a day in Quito — but feels rushed when trying to include the Amazon, the highlands, and the islands. Travelers who want to go deeper into the Amazon or add hacienda stays in the Andes are better served by two weeks. The Galapagos cruises themselves typically run five, seven, or eight days.

Ecuador has a strong luxury offering, particularly in the highlands where historic haciendas — some dating to the colonial period — provide exceptional comfort, outstanding food, and private access to the surrounding landscape. In the Galapagos, the top-tier vessels combine serious wildlife access with 5-star services. Amazon lodges range from comfortable to genuinely luxurious, with the best properties offering private guides, excellent cuisine, and accommodations that make no compromise on quality.

Few destinations in the world match Ecuador for wildlife density relative to its size. The Galapagos Islands are the obvious draw — marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, sea lions, giant tortoises, and Galapagos penguins can all be encountered at close range on the wildlife-rich islands. The Amazon adds a completely different set of species, such as a variety of primates, giant otters, tapirs, caimans, and hundreds of bird species accessible from well-positioned lodges. The cloud forest of the Mindo valley, just two hours from Quito, is one of the best birding destinations on earth, with tanagers, hummingbirds, and cock-of-the-rock reliably spotted.

Ecuador can be designed for almost any activity level. Quito sightseeing, hacienda stays, and Galapagos wildlife walks are all accessible to most travelers with a reasonable level of fitness. The more demanding options — Andes hikes, horseback and bicycle riding, or longer Amazon or cloud forest treks — can be added for travelers who want them. Galapagos excursions typically involve moderate walking on uneven volcanic terrain, and some involve wet landings from pangas. Pacing and activity level are always tailored to the individual traveler when building an itinerary.

Ecuador tends to be paired easily with Peru — Quito to Lima or Cusco is a straightforward connection, and the two countries together make a strong two-to-three week South American itinerary. The Galapagos also pairs well with the Peruvian Amazon or Machu Picchu for travelers who want a broader wildlife-and-culture journey. Internal flights within Ecuador are short and reliable, which makes multi-region itineraries straightforward to execute.

Scale and concentration. Ecuador contains four distinct world-class ecosystems — the Andes, the Amazon, the Pacific coast, and the Galapagos — all within a few hours of each other. Travelers who would need a month to cover comparable ground elsewhere can do it in ten days here. With Quito, the highland hacienda culture, and the depth of biodiversity, Ecuador consistently surprises travelers who expected to spend most of their time at sea.
