Brazil Travel: Jungle, Culture, Coast & Private Tailor-Made Adventures

Brazil spans more ecosystems than almost any country on earth, from the Atlantic rainforest that clings to Rio de Janeiro’s hillsides to the flooded savannas of the Pantanal, the cathedral darkness of the Amazon, and the crystalline rivers of Bonito. Watch jaguars hunt along the banks of the Cuiabá River, float past pink river dolphins on an Amazon tributary, stand at the edge of Iguazu Falls as the mist rises, or slow down entirely in the colorful cobblestone streets of colonial Paraty. The food shifts dramatically from region to region, the wildlife is staggering in its variety, and the warmth of Brazilian hospitality is well-known for a reason.

Every itinerary we design is built around your interests and pace, using lodges and properties chosen from firsthand experience and guides who know their regions deeply. Explore our itineraries below and contact a Vaya specialist to begin planning your Brazil journey.

Regions at a glance:

  • Rio de Janeiro — One of the world’s great cities, framed by Atlantic rainforest, granite peaks, and an eclectic food scene
  • The Pantanal — The world’s largest tropical wetland and the best place on earth to see jaguars, giant otters, and capybaras in the wild
  • The Amazon — Dive into the world’s most famous rainforest, all while searching for wildlife and visiting remote communities
  • Iguazu Falls — The most powerful waterfall in the world, straddling the border of Brazil and Argentina
  • Paraty & the Costa Verde — A perfectly preserved 18th-century colonial town on the coast south of Rio, surrounded by jungle-clad mountains, waterfalls, and island-dotted bays
  • Bonito — A lesser-visited gem in Mato Grosso do Sul with crystal-clear rivers, natural aquariums, and some of Brazil’s best snorkeling
  • Salvador & the Northeast — Brazil’s African-influenced city, with a UNESCO-listed historic center, Afro-Brazilian culture, candomblé traditions, and the dune fields and azure lakes of Lençóis Maranhenses

Frequently Asked Questions: Brazil

Brazil’s range is wide, and the best itineraries tend to combine more than one region. Rio de Janeiro is great for several days of exploration, with the city’s setting, neighborhoods, and food unlike anywhere else in South America. Beyond Rio, the Pantanal offers some of the best and most unique wildlife viewing on the continent, with jaguar sightings on the Cuiabá River a strong possibility from July through October. The Amazon is best explored by riverboat, where dense rainforest, pink river dolphins, and black caimans are all accessible. Iguazu Falls, the colonial streets of Paraty, and the crystalline snorkeling rivers of Bonito round out the most requested experiences.

It depends heavily on which regions you’re visiting. For jaguar tracking in the Pantanal, July through October is the dry season and is when water levels drop, wildlife concentrates around remaining rivers, and sightings are at their most reliable. The Amazon is navigable year-round but the high water season between January and June opens up flooded forest that is inaccessible in the dry months. Rio and the coast is pleasant most of the year, though December through March brings extra heat, humidity, and afternoon rain. Travelers combining multiple regions should plan their timing around their highest priority experience and build the rest of the itinerary around it.

10+ days is ideal to do more than one region justice. A week is enough for Rio and Paraty or Rio and the Amazon, but feels rushed when trying to combine three or more areas. Travelers who want to include Iguazu Falls, Bonito, the Pantanal, Bahia, and Paraty alongside the Pantanal and Amazon are better served by two weeks or more. Brazil is a large country with significant internal flying, and realistic pacing makes a real difference to how the trip feels on the ground.

Brazil has a strong luxury tier, with many hotels and lodges offering a high level of personal service. Rio has excellent five-star hotels with views over Guanabara Bay and Ipanema. The Pantanal and Amazon has first-class jungle lodges that combine comfort with serious wildlife access. Paraty has some of the most charming boutique pousadas in the country. Luxury in Brazil tends to come from setting and access rather than scale, and that suits most discerning travelers well.

Few destinations on earth match Brazil for wildlife variety. The Pantanal is the most productive region — jaguars, giant otters, giant anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, and over 650 bird species are all regularly encountered. The Amazon adds a completely different set of species, including pink river dolphins, black caimans, and primates. The cerrado and Atlantic forest each have their own distinct wildlife. Serious wildlife travelers often combine two or three ecosystems in a single trip, with guides who specialize in each region.

Brazil itineraries can be designed for almost any activity level. Pantanal wildlife drives and boat excursions are accessible to most travelers regardless of fitness. Amazon journeys involve short walks and canoe trips that are generally moderate. Iguazu Falls requires comfortable walking but no technical ability. The most physically demanding option is multi-day trekking in areas like the Chapada Diamantina, which can be built in for travelers who want it. Pacing is one of the most important variables in a Brazil itinerary and is always tailored to the individual traveler.

Brazil combines naturally with Argentina, with Buenos Aires and Iguazu Falls easily accessible with daily direct flights. Peru and the Galapagos are also popular additions for travelers doing a broader South American circuit. The key is allowing enough time in each country to go beyond the surface — a two-week Brazil itinerary combined with five days in Buenos Aires works well, while trying to add Peru on top risks shortchanging all three.

Scale, variety, and culture. Brazil is the only Portuguese-speaking country in South America, which gives it a distinct character — the music, food, and social warmth feel different from the Spanish-speaking world next door. It also contains ecosystems that exist nowhere else in the same form: the Pantanal, the Amazon basin, and the cerrado are all globally unique. Most travelers are surprised by how much the country changes from region to region, and by how different Rio feels from the Pantanal, which feels nothing like the Amazon. That variety is Brazil’s greatest asset.
