Frequently Asked Questions: Chile & Patagonia

Chile rewards specialist knowledge more than almost any destination in South America. The country’s extraordinary geographic range — from the Atacama in the north to Patagonia in the south — means routing, pacing and property selection make an enormous difference to the quality of the experience. Our specialists have traveled the length of Chile, from the high-altitude salt flats of the Atacama to the glaciers of Torres del Paine, and they use that firsthand knowledge to build itineraries that feel nothing like a template. Every journey is designed from scratch around your interests, travel style and timeline.

Chile’s regions peak at very different times of year, which makes timing a matter of matching the experiences you want. Patagonia and Torres del Paine are best from November through March, when longer days and milder temperatures make trekking and outdoor exploration at its finest — though the park can be windy and busy at peak season in January and February. The Atacama is a year-round destination, though spring and autumn offer more comfortable temperatures for exploring at altitude. Chile’s Wine Country is most enjoyable from March through May during harvest season, when the vineyards are at their most active and the weather is warm and dry. Santiago is a pleasant year-round base. Easter Island can be visited at any time, though October through April offers the best weather.

Both sides of Patagonia offer spectacular scenery, but they have distinct characters. Chilean Patagonia is wilder, wetter and more remote — Torres del Paine National Park and the Carretera Austral are among the most unspoiled landscapes in South America. Argentine Patagonia offers the Perito Moreno Glacier and the hiking trails of El Chaltén, with easier access and generally drier weather. Many of our most rewarding itineraries combine both sides in a single journey, crossing the Andes to experience the best of each.

Chile combines naturally with Argentina — Patagonia in particular is best experienced across both sides of the border. Argentina’s Mendoza wine region pairs well with Chile’s Colchagua Valley for a wine and culinary journey. Peru is a popular addition for travelers who want to include Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley alongside a Chile trip. Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni can be reached from the Atacama as a dramatic cross-border extension. Our specialists design these multi-country itineraries regularly and route them carefully to avoid unnecessary backtracking and transfer time.

The W Trek covers approximately 80 kilometers over five to seven days and involves significant elevation gain on some sections. It requires a reasonable level of fitness and comfortable hiking experience, though it does not require technical mountaineering skills. For travelers who want to experience Torres del Paine without the full trek, there are excellent day hikes and guided excursions accessible from the park’s lodges that deliver iconic views without the multi-day commitment. Our specialists will discuss your fitness level and preferences openly to make sure we match the right Torres del Paine experience to what you actually want.

A focused trip to a single region — Patagonia alone, or the Atacama alone — works well in eight to ten days. To combine two regions such as Santiago, Wine Country and Patagonia, twelve to fourteen days is a realistic minimum to avoid feeling rushed. A journey covering the full length of Chile — Atacama, Santiago, Lake District and Patagonia — typically requires three weeks and rewards every day. Easter Island adds at least four nights given its distance from the mainland. Our specialists will help you prioritize based on your available time and the experiences that matter most to you.
