Zimbabwe Travel: Safaris, Vic Falls & Private Tailor-Made Adventures

Zimbabwe remains one of southern Africa’s most rewarding safari destinations, and one of its least visited, which is part of its appeal. Hwange National Park holds one of the largest elephant populations on the continent. Mana Pools sits on the Zambezi floodplain and offers canoe and walking safaris. Victoria Falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, is one of the genuine wonders of the natural world. Beyond the parks, the ancient stone enclosures of Great Zimbabwe tell the story of a trading empire that stretched to the Swahili coast, and the quiet waters of Lake Kariba offer a slower, more contemplative side of the country that most itineraries miss entirely.

Vaya specialists have traveled to Zimbabwe firsthand and know the camps, the seasonal conditions, and how to combine these regions into a journey that rewards the time spent. Browse the itineraries below and contact us to start planning your Zimbabwe safari today.

  • Hwange National Park — Zimbabwe’s largest park and home to enormous elephant herds, lions, wild dog, and some of the finest small camps in southern Africa
  • Mana Pools National Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Zambezi floodplain where canoe safaris and walking put you at eye-level with the wildlife
  • Lake Kariba — one of the world’s largest man-made lakes, with safaris, tigerfish fishing, and laidback lodges along the Matusadona shoreline
  • Great Zimbabwe Ruins — the largest ancient stone structure in sub-Saharan Africa, built by the Shona civilization in the 11th century

Frequently Asked Questions: Zimbabwe Travel & Safaris

Safari in Zimbabwe is defined by small lodges, excellent guiding, and genuine remoteness. Hwange offers classic game drive safari with some of the highest elephant densities in Africa. Mana Pools puts you on the Zambezi floodplain with walking and canoe safaris that feel genuinely close to the wild. Victoria Falls anchors most itineraries at the beginning or end. The overall experience is generally quieter and more intimate than East Africa or nearby South Africa.

The dry season runs from May through October and is the best time for wildlife viewing. Water sources shrink during this period, concentrating animals around rivers and waterholes — particularly in Hwange, where the artificial waterholes attract enormous herds from July onward. Mana Pools is most dramatic from September through October when the Zambezi floodplain dries out and predator activity peaks. Victoria Falls is most impressive between February and May when the Zambezi is running high after the rains.

Zimbabwe holds strong populations of elephant, lion, leopard, buffalo, and wild dog. Hwange is one of the best places in Africa to see large elephant herds and has a reliable wild dog population. Mana Pools is known for lions, leopards, and large concentrations of elephant and buffalo along the Zambezi. Rhino can be seen at Matobo Hills and in private conservancies. Zimbabwe’s birdlife is exceptional throughout, with over 600 recorded species.

A focused Zimbabwe itinerary works well in 8 to 11 days. A typical route combines two nights at Victoria Falls, three to four nights in Hwange, and three to four nights in Mana Pools. Travelers with more time or different interests can add Lake Kariba, the Great Zimbabwe Ruins near Masvingo, or cross into Botswana to include Chobe or the Okavango Delta.

Zimbabwe is safe for travelers. The national parks and tourist infrastructure are well established, and the country receives visitors without significant security concerns. Standard travel precautions apply, as they do anywhere. Your specialist will brief you on any current conditions and advise you before you travel.

Zimbabwe pairs naturally with Botswana, particularly Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta, which share the Zambezi ecosystem and can be combined without long travel days. South Africa is a common addition, either as a starting point via Johannesburg or as a separate leg including a private game reserve and Cape Town. Zambia, which shares Victoria Falls across the border, can also be incorporated for travelers who want to experience both sides of the falls or add South Luangwa and its legendary walking safaris.

The difference between a good camp and the right camp in Hwange or Mana Pools is significant, and the seasonal timing affects the experience considerably. Our specialists have been on the ground in Zimbabwe, know the properties firsthand, and build itineraries that make the most of the time you have. Contact us to start planning.
