The Amazon Rainforest covers more than 2.5 million square miles and holds roughly 10% of all species on Earth. Peru, Ecuador, and Brazil offer the most accessible entry points, where the river opens into oxbow lakes, flooded forest, and blackwater channels. Pink river dolphins surface alongside riverboats, howler monkeys call from the canopies, and scarlet macaws descend to clay licks at dawn. Nothing prepares you for the scale and energy of the Amazon until you’re there.
Whether you cruise down a snaking river in a luxury riverboat or travel to remote ecolodges set deep in the jungle, you’ll travel alongside excellent naturalist guides who will bring this ecosystem to life. Our Destination Specialists have traveled these routes firsthand and know which vessels, which lodges, and which seasons deliver. Browse the itineraries below and contact a Vaya specialist to start planning your Amazon journey.

As with any wildlife safari, what you’ll see can entirely be left up to luck and chance. However, the Amazon offers some of the most reliable wildlife viewing in the world, and our clients often see a range of primates, caimans, tapirs, anacondas, river turtles, and an extraordinary range of birdlife. Night excursions add a different dimension entirely, with species active after dark that are rarely seen in daylight.
The high and low water seasons each have advantages. Low water, roughly May through October, concentrates wildlife around shrinking water sources and makes animals easier to spot. High water, November through April, floods the forest and opens up areas inaccessible the rest of the year, including spectacular flooded forest best explored by canoe. Birding is strong year-round. A Vaya Destination Specialist can match the season to your priorities.
A riverboat cruise covers more ground, moving between habitats and stopping for guided excursions by skiff. It gives a sense of the region’s scale and variety. An ecolodge stay is more stationary and immersive, allowing deeper access to the surrounding forest over several days. Some travelers combine both, which gives the fullest picture of the ecosystem.
Less than most people expect. The primary activities are boat excursions, guided forest walks, and wildlife watching. Trails can be uneven and muddy, and the heat and humidity require some adjustment, but the pace is generally relaxed. More active options exist at certain lodges but are optional. The Amazon suits travelers of most fitness levels, including older travelers and families with children.
Most travelers combine an Amazon trip with something else. The Peruvian Amazon pairs well with Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley. Ecuador’s lodges sit within easy reach of Quito, the Andean Highlands, and the Galapagos. Brazil’s Amazon connects well with Rio de Janeiro, Iguazú Falls, or the Pantanal. The Amazon also works as a standalone trip for travelers who want to focus entirely on the rainforest.
Yes, with the right planning. Children engaged by wildlife tend to find it one of the most memorable trips they take. The main considerations are age and heat tolerance, and some lodges have minimum age requirements. A Vaya specialist can identify properties with structured children’s programming and guides experienced with younger visitors.
“The beauty and abundant diversity of life in the Amazon blew me away.”
Lon Nestrud
“My Amazon guides really made that trip adventurous. They were, in my book, the Amazon Rainforest 'whisperers'. There wasn't a bird, monkey, or anything else they couldn't find.”
Belinda Goldsmith
“Our terrific guides taught us a great deal about the animals and plants we were seeing. We fell in love with the place, seeing it through their eyes.”
Lee Monroe
“Every guide we had was excellent. They far exceeded our expectations and gave us outstanding value. They were funny, knowledgeable and flexible.”
Elizabeth Siaba
“Everything was taken care of for us, which made it very enjoyable and carefree.”
