Morocco Travel: Desert, Culture & Private Tailor-Made Adventures

Morocco has been drawing travelers for centuries, and it is not hard to see why. The colorful medinas of Fez and Marrakech, mazes of smoky markets dotted with spice stalls, brilliantly orange seas of sand dunes stretched out in the Sahara, hiking in the High Atlas Mountains, and insight into traditional Berber ways of life that have changed little in generations. The country moves between ancient souks, desert landscapes, mountain passes, and a sparkling Atlantic coastline, and are accompanied with the tastes of rich tagine, mint tea, and the Call to Prayer drifting over rooftops.

First-time visitors to Morocco almost always leave with a list of places they want to come back for. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, contact a Vaya specialist today to start planning your next Morocco adventure.

Frequently Asked Questions: Morocco Travel

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the most comfortable times to visit. Temperatures are mild across the country, the high passes in the Atlas are open, and the Sahara is warm without being punishing. Summer brings intense heat in the interior, particularly in Fez and Marrakech, though the coast stays pleasant. Winter is surprisingly cold in the mountains and desert at night but can be a rewarding time to visit the imperial cities.

It depends on how much of Morocco you want to cover. A short trip (approx. 1 week) can focus on one or two regions and still feel complete. A longer itinerary (approx. 2 weeks) opens up the full range, from the imperial cities to the Sahara to the Atlantic coast. Most travelers who have been to Morocco will tell you they wished they had more time.

Morocco is a well-established travel destination and is generally very safe for tourists. The cities are busy and the medinas can feel overwhelming at first, which is one of the reasons a good, local private guide makes such a difference, particularly in Fez where the old medina is like a labyrinth. Standard travel precautions apply, and your Vaya Morocco specialist will brief you thoroughly before departure.

Fez and Marrakech are the two cities most visitors build their trip around, and both deserve several days each with their artisinal crafts and spice markets, excellent food, colorful architecture, and history. The Sahara around Merzouga is a highlight for most travelers, best reached via the Draa Valley with its ancient kasbahs. The High Atlas, the blue streets of Chefchaouen in the north, and the Atlantic coast town of Essaouira are all worth adding for travelers with more time.

Moroccan food is often served family-style and can be accommodated for all dietary requirements with advance notice. Tagine is the staple, slow-cooked in a clay pot with meat or vegetables and couscous, and is served everywhere from roadside family-run cafes to high-end restaurants. Bastilla, a flaky pastry filled with chicken and dusted with powdered sugar, is a Fez specialty worth seeking out. On the coast, fresh seafood is excellent and cheap. The night market at Djemaa el-Fna in Marrakech is one of the great street food experiences anywhere, and mint tea is served at every meal. We can build cooking classes and market visits into any itinerary for travelers who want to go deeper.

Riads — traditional courtyard houses converted into boutique guesthouses — are the signature way to stay in the medinas of Moroccan towns and cities. In the Sahara, luxury tented camps offer a genuine desert experience without sacrificing comfort. The Atlas and the north have their own selection of mountain lodges and smaller boutique beachfront properties. We work with each traveler to match them to properties based on their desires, budget, and preferences.

Most of our itineraries use private vehicles with a local driver, which is by far the most flexible and comfortable way to travel between regions. Internal flights are available between the main cities and are worth considering for longer itineraries.

Morocco works very well for families, particularly those with older children and teenagers who will engage with the history, the markets, and the fast pace of moving through bustling cities. A camel trek into the Sahara, a cooking class in Marrakech, and a gentle hike with a waterfall swim in the Atlas are all experiences that land well with younger travelers. We have designed many family itineraries in Morocco and can tailor the pace, activities, and accommodations accordingly.

Vaya specialists have traveled Morocco firsthand, know which riad is worth the premium, which guide brings the medina to life, and how to route an itinerary that captures the full range of the country without feeling rushed. We have been sending clients to Morocco for years and build every trip from scratch around each individual traveler.
